Different

I’m reading a fascinating new book written by Youngme Moon, a professor at Harvard Business School. Different demonstrates “how to succeed in a world where conformity reigns, but exceptions rule.” The premise is that most marketers fall into the habit of thinking the way to be better is to simply do more, when in fact it’s possible to improve a product all the way to mediocrity.

GOOD. IS.

Good Is
My colleague and Rox EVP, Kelly Borgen discovered GOOD a few months back. It’s a “collaboration of people, businesses and nonprofits, pushing the world forward” via a web site and quarterly magazine. The newly published spring issue focuses on “neighborhoods” and is a meaty, thought-provoking read. One of the best articles is an interview with Richard Florida, the urban theorist who wrote The Rise of the Creative Class in 2002. His latest book, The Great Reset, promises to be equally as powerful examining how the Great Recession will reshape the way we live and work. For more info log on to www.good.is.

The City by the Bay, Nasty Little Rumors and The Theatre

Just a week from today, the 51st Annual PCBC will convene in the beautiful city by the bay.  As always, the conference is a wonderful opportunity to connect, network and get inspired. I’ll be there…right after finishing my Seafood Louis at Tadich Grill.
On another note, several weeks ago I heard a nasty little rumor about a 3.8% tax on home sales and other real estate transactions being included in the health care bill. According to snopes.com, “if a couple with a combined annual income of $250,000 sold …

Tidbits to Rox Blocks

ROX has been a little quieter than usual this year, with the exception of our April Fools Day – 30th Anniversary prank…Digging the Dirt. We’ve been busy. Many of the new social media platforms we talked about in our ‘09 “Tidbits” emails are today bringing traffic and buyers to our client’s sites. Special thanks to Mike Maples of Trumark Homes for his vision and inventive spirit. Using your iPhone or Blackberry go to www.liveathighlights.com or text HIGHLIGHTS to 22345 to check out Trumark’s mobile site for High Lights in Granada Hills.

Speaking of “Tidbits,” beginning today – we will be re-introducing our eblast communiqué based on popular demand. We’ll be broadening the topics a bit, throwing in a little gossip and real news, and giving our opinion on a wide range of topics to keep it interesting and maybe a little controversial. Look for our first installment of ‘Rox Blocks’ on Monday June 7th.
